Mike Shaw

Mike’s Vlog, Ep Zer0 “China Prep”

Michael Shaw grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii, but has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than fifteen years. He was fortunate to grow up around artists, craftspeople, and innovators who taught him to be a lifelong learner and test the limits of what was possible. As a result, Michael has learned a great variety of skills in his career working as a manager, marketer, writer, designer, videographer, stock trader, restaurant worker, and student.

As part of his drive for diverse knowledge, he keeps up on the latest tech and world events, and enjoys games, literature, and movies alike. He builds his own computers and always has a number of home projects to tinker on or fix, in addition to various art projects like his novel.

Michael will be visiting Shenzhen starting in 2018 as part of the collaboration between Makefashion Edu and Cultivative.org to empower creative people all around the world to improve their lives and their communities through arts, science, and technology.

He wants to amplify the message of the maker community with social media, video, marketing, and events. He believes that together, we can inspire people to build, improve, and create the culture, art, and technology of their dreams.

Mike’s Maker Story: Building My First Table

Mike’s Maker Story: Building My First Table

This video is the story of how mike wanted to fill a need in his wife’s workspace, and how he dove in head first to building her a table from scratch, knowing very little about woodworking. How-to videos often come from the perspective of an expert showing off their craft; this video is more of a how-to on how to approach a new skill, how to be flexible, how to fail, and how to get help, because I am NO expert woodworker.

HTM Photo Studio: Final Review

High Tech Middle North County San Diego Photography Studio - 2020 Mike volunteered to give a professional review to the photos of middle school students from High Tech High. As this was during the 2020 Pandemic, students had few creative outlets and sharing photos...

Olivier

Olivier is not a social media poster, however he shares his engineering skills freely with members and we have put the results of his work on Twitter and YouTube! If you know him, you may be able to spot it!

He has volunteered time in both training people how to build circuits, and building many circuits used by MakeFashion Edu!

Above is a circuit that allows students to create beautiful LED light shows without the use of programming. This is really important to SteamHead because we believe that technology is not just for engineers, or people who self-identify as engineers. It’s also for people who feel completely the opposite!

Empowering use of tech without requiring a deep study of tech – it’s a bit controversial, however you’ll find that our students don’t lack a depth of study, they just shift it! Many users of the above PCB focus on storytelling through fashion and design, and spend a LOT of time in the depths of visual communication.
