Marc Dusseiller

Marc came with a crew of organizers and participants to Shenzhen to work on the Shenzhen GOSH event. SteamHead was filled with great folks from the event, and they gave a lot back to not only Shenzhen but also the global community with their event, which took place at Open FIESTA.

MakerEd Taobao List

Hi all, we have a list of Taobao.com purchases for Maker Projects!
If you can’t get to the OneDrive, WeChat me at boomtown001 for a copy.

HOW TO PAY

HOW TO RECEIVE

If you can’t speak any Chinese, try to have it shipped to your business! Have a friend help you set up the address. If you ship to your home, they will call you on the phone and ask you things you might not be able to answer. Like, “Are you at home right now?”

SEARCHING TIPS

You can search on Taobao using images! Get the app on your phone and just take pictures of stuff. Fun and easy.

Another trick is to use Bing Translate on your English words, paste the Chinese results into Bing Image search, and tweak your phrase until it’s ok. Then, go to Taobao and start pasting in the Chinese.

When you find at least 1 search result that is correct, copy/paste the title into Bing Translate (Chinese to English) and find out which characters are the best descriptors, and then paste those back into Taobao. Repeat and continue!

Friendship Dress

Composed of Athena Hu and Molly Li, eight years old, the Friendship Dress has been inspired by the friendship the two designers have shared for five years now. Their piece incorporates LED lighting and fabric artwork on a dress format. Describing the design process as a challenge in the project, an earlier comment by Athena sheds light on their final piece: “Molly and I [have been] friends since we were three years old. We love to play princess games. One day, under the starry night, we played [our] favorite princess game again. Something felt special. That is ‘friendship’.”
Materials
bit lighting, refashioned fiber optic toys, stick on jewels, white dresses, feathers
Workshop Insights
These two girls created everything with the help of their parents. A funny bit is that the girls and the parents were ALL not focused on engineering or anything technical. They wanted to Use technology for their project, but weren’t interested in learning all the details. This is FANTASTIC!

“Making”, EdTech, Design Thinking – all of these things seem to be focused on STEM careers but I feel they are actually not. Using technology doesn’t mean that you love engineering. Keep that in mind while building your own fashion tech projects!
