Chapter 1: What is all this?

The Virtual Maker Exhibition is SteamHead’s first multi-school online exhibition! Teachers and students come together to showcase their projects in an online space is that like a video game with live conferencing capabilities.

Early in 2020, as the pandemic continued, we took the opportunity to explore novel methods of exhibiting and collaborating.  What we found was new methods and mediums to interact in familiar ways. What we build now will be on the road to the future of work and education!

Using Mozilla Hubs, students create their own worlds and exhibition spaces for their in real life creations. Linked together in a network of portals, these virtual galleries can be navigated on our World Map. Still want to participate but do not have time to create your own virtual space? Teachers can submit content on behalf of their classes and SteamHead’s volunteers will place it in a virtual world.

30 seconds, you’ve read it!

Below is a 20 minute video, but it dives STRAIGHT in on how to get started.

Chapter 2 : Diving straight in

No words can describe appropriately what the a virtual experience is, you have to experience it for yourself. Go to hubs.mozilla.com and run around to see what it’s like!

Firefox Browser recommended! Performance on phones and iPads varies. Virtual Reality headsets work great, but a laptop is all you need.

Time for you: 5 mins, a Classroom: 15 mins

Chapter 3 : The Entrance Hall to All Portals

Start through our entrance hall! Here you will find the portals to everyone’s rooms! It is setup to be a central hub for accessing different project rooms, constantly under construction. Sometimes a room might be for a particular school, or sometimes we have students from various schools working on the same project. Make a friend in the space. You can find the Entrance Hall here:

SteamHead

Coordinator

SteamHead is coordinating this activity through it’s network of volunteers. Connecting students with the outside world is our real goal, and our volunteers come from a variety of schools and companies to make great things happen!

Online Learning

We feel that the pandemic pushed online learning forward, but it is here to stay! Level up your online skills to create genuine experiences and connect with your community.

We are teachers, so this often means creating genuine classrooms, but it applies across the board to industries and careers.

Level up your skills at expression and creating spaces in the online world to ensure that you are actively experiencing what’s new in the world!

Progressive Education

Our education values lean to the far progressive side. We believe in student empowerment, and strive to find ways to leave tests and worksheets in the dust.

Embracing new tech like Mozilla Hubs is best approached with a mindset that students and teachers are both learners. The teacher does not need to become an expert, but rather a project manager.
